What happens if a brake caliper fails?

Essentially, the function of brake calipers is to squeeze the brake pads against the brake discs, so that the car slows down or comes to a complete stop when you touch the brake pedal. Therefore, a broken or faulty caliper means that you will not be able to stop your vehicle as quickly.

Signs of a broken or faulty brake caliper include:

• Illumination of the brake warning light which means that brake fluid is leaking
• Pulling to one side when you apply the brakes

It is not always necessary to replace a brake caliper. Sometimes it can start to stick because the brake fluid needs topping up. Our mechanics will be able to advise.

When do I replace my Brake Pads or Shoes?

Your vehicle’s brakes are checked as part of your annual MOT Test, but you should bring your car in to Otterbourne Cars if:

• You’ve done a visual check and the lining is only around 3mm thick
• You do a lot of city driving where you are constantly stopping and starting
• You’ve done more than 12,000 miles
